EquipmentLeading Companies Working on Solid State Batteries

December 11, 2022by Bhawins0

Solid-state batteries are a relatively new technology that has the potential to transform the way we store and use energy. Solid state batteries, as opposed to traditional lithium-ion batteries, use a solid electrolyte to facilitate the flow of ions between the cathode and anode. This electrolyte change has several benefits, including increased energy density, improved safety, and a longer lifespan. There are very few companies who have expertise in this field & Bhawins is one among them. Bhawins has a dedicated team to develop long lasting high efficient batteries for electrochemical devices

What are Solid State Batteries?

Solid-state batteries are a type of rechargeable battery that uses solid electrolytes instead of the liquid electrolytes found in traditional lithium-ion batteries. They can power electric vehicles, portable electronics, aircraft, and satellites. Solid-state Batteries are considered safer because they do not contain flammable liquid electrolytes.

Here is a list of the top solid-state battery companies that are currently producing or developing solid-state batteries:

1.  QuantumScape

QuantumScape is another company working on solid-state lithium metal batteries for electric vehicles. Its technology is considered cutting-edge, with a prototype battery capable of charging to 80% capacity in 15 minutes.

Increasing the capacity and charging time of all-solid-state batteries is one of the challenges in their development. QuantumScape recently announced that it has solved this issue and that its solid-state batteries can charge to 80% capacity in 15 minutes without forming dendrites, which can cause batteries to fail.

2.  Solid Power

Solid Power is a pioneer in the development of rechargeable all-solid-state batteries for electric vehicles. These batteries are distinguished by their high energy density and ability to power a wide range of devices. Tesla, the most popular EV manufacturer, is said to have had problems with its lithium-ion batteries, which are prone to exploding or catching fire.

Solid Power’s all-solid-state batteries, on the other hand, are considered safer because they do not contain flammable liquid electrolytes. The company currently manufactures 20 Ah multi-layer all-solid-state lithium metal batteries on its continuous roll-to-roll production line in Colorado and is working with strategic partners to validate these batteries.

3.  Ampcera

It is common knowledge that electrolytes (chemical sources of electricity) and electrodes are required to manufacture any type of battery (anodes and cathodes).

Ampcera is a niche solid-state battery company that focuses on the development of high-performance solid-state electrolyte materials. These materials are designed for use in solid-state batteries that will be used in electric vehicles and other applications.

The company’s solid-state electrolyte materials include sulfides, NASICON-type phosphates, and garnets, and are designed to improve the performance and safety of solid-state batteries.

4.  Toyota

Toyota is a major player in the development of solid-state battery technology, investing billions of dollars in research and development to incorporate solid-state batteries into its production EVs. With over 1,000 solid-state battery patents, the company is the market leader among established automakers.

In 2019, Toyota and Panasonic announced the formation of a joint venture, Prime Planet Energy & Solutions, to develop and mass-produce solid-state lithium batteries. Toyota owns 51% of the joint venture, which started operations in 2020. At CES 2022, Toyota announced that the first Toyota with solid-state batteries will be a hybrid vehicle launched in 2025. The company’s hybrid strategy will allow it to gather data that will help it deploy the technology in fully electric vehicles. Toyota is also investing in hydrogen car technology.

5.  ProLigium Technology

ProLogium is a leading developer and manufacturer of all-solid-state batteries and is one of the first to reach mass production. The company uses lithium-ceramic (oxide solid) electrolytes in its batteries and began mass-producing them in 2017 at its G1 factory in Taiwan. These batteries are primarily used in consumer and wearable electronics products and do not serve the electric vehicle market.

However, ProLogium is expected to begin mass production of lithium-ceramic solid-state batteries for the electric vehicle market at its G2 factory in Taiwan. The G2 plant is expected to have a production capacity of 1-2 GWh and is set to begin operations this year. The company has signed strategic cooperation agreements with top OEMs, including electric vehicle makers NIO and AIWAYS, and has attracted significant investments totaling 100 million USD from dGav Capital, SBCVC, FAW Group, and the Bank of Group Investment.

ProLogium has received numerous international awards for its technological advances, including the Edison Awards in 2019.

6.  BrightVolt

BrightVolt makes solid-state lithium-polymer batteries for IOT devices. Instead of the liquid electrolyte found in traditional lithium-ion batteries, these batteries use a proprietary polymer matrix electrolyte.

This improves the stability, dependability, and safety of BrightVolt’s batteries. Polymers are materials that have both solid and liquid properties and can be engineered to have the best possible properties for use as electrolytes.

BrightVolt’s polymer matrix electrolytes are polymeric solid ion-conducting elements that do not contain free-flowing volatile solvents, resulting in more stable and safe batteries. They also have a higher energy density than traditional lithium-ion cell electrodes because they bond directly to them.

The high cost of manufacturing is one of the main challenges with solid state batteries. The materials and processes used in the production of solid state electrolytes are more complex and costly than those used in traditional lithium-ion batteries. However, as technology advances and improves, the cost of manufacturing solid state batteries is likely to fall, making them more competitive with traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Solid state batteries have the potential to transform the way we store and use energy.  Solid state batteries have the potential to transform the way using energy. The cost of manufacturing solid state batteries is currently high, but it is expected to fall as technology develops and improves.
